This project contained numerous challenges. The monster had to perfectly match the one seen in the TV show, the snow globe was nearly 6m high which required precise engineer and wind calculations and careful negotiation with local councils for permissions and it had to be robust and modular enough to withstand the rigors of touring – all underpinned by a tight timeline.
Being able to access the 3D files for the myriapod, we opted to 3D print the monster. The final build consisted of nearly 200 independent parts printed across 5 different machines, before being expertly combined and thematically finished. This resulted in a terrifyingly accurate replica.
We chose a mix of city locations and regional towns close to season 2 filming locations for a combination of high footfall, mass-awareness activation and surprise and delight locations with higher levels of engagement.
Alongside the activity as a scannable QR code linking to an augmented reality experience, where a Myriapod burst from the ground for wider digital amplification.
